- HR-DIAGRAM
-
- Hertzsprung-Russel diagram shows the relationship between star's magnitude and surface temperature. In the diagram
- the horizontal axis shows the spectral class (surface temperature) while the vertical axis shows the absolute magnitude.
- When stars are placed into the diagram, most of them settle into a narrow belt, which contains all the main sequence
- stars. Above it are the giants and under it the dwarfs.
-
- When a star is born out of the interstellar matter, it becomes denser and hotter. The star moves from top right to the
- main sequence, where it stays most of its life. After the star has exhausted its hydrogen reserves in fusion reactions, it
- becomes a giant. Its surface temperature decreases and it once again moves to the top right of the diagram. There the
- star uses up its fuel in the next fusion reactions much faster than in the main sequence and the star becomes, depending
- on its size, either a dwarf, a neutron star or a black hole, and retires to the bottom part of the diagram.
- The main sequence is to be seen as whiter part from top left to low right.
